Why I’m Thankful on Thanksgiving – Toby’s Take

While all you humans are eating your turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole and pumpkin pie, I will have my eyes fixed on you, ready to pounce on whatever you happen to drop. One might think this is all I’m worried about – grabbing a lick of gravy or a morsel of turkey, but it’s not.

I’ll also be thinking about how lucky I am — I sleep on a plush bed under not one or two, but at least three or four blankets at night, I get two meals-a-day plus healthy (and sometimes homemade) treats, I get to travel almost everywhere my mom can take me, my mom makes sure I’m up-to-date on all my shots and keeps me healthy, I have more toys than one dog knows what to do with and have aunts and uncles who spoil me like I’m one of their own.

But, unfortunately, this isn’t the case for all dogs. And, although I’ve never experienced it, I understand that harsh reality. I’m a pet store dog. (insert gasp here) My mom bought me after being allergic to a number of shelter dogs, and after falling in love with me while in a pet store. Although her guilt is still there, (I hear it’s a family trait) I’m happy she did. I know someone else could have purchased me, got me home and ignored me – or worse yet sent me to a shelter because they didn’t want to be bothered with me anymore.

So, to all my four-legged friends out there – give your moms and dads an extra lick on Thanksgiving and lets all keep working together to find dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, horses and other animals who don’t have it as good as we do, a loving home.

Happy Thanksgiving!

xoxo,
Toby

  1. Toby that was a beautiful, beautiful post! It is so nice that you are such a thankful doggie!
I know your humans are thankful that they have you and you know what? ALL animals are special no matter where they came from. If they were purchased, rescued, etc….doesn't matter….they all deserve our love just the same!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

happy thanksgiving from melissa, zeke and rascal (i'm pretty sure my cats are grateful too)

  3. I'm glad she did, too, Toby. Otherwise you never could have touched so many lives. Your mom is very lucky to have met you when she did, before someone else snapped you up! I agree with Caren, all animals deserve our love, in spite of and perhaps sometimes even because of, where they came from.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. Yes, we are lucky doggies and kitties!
Hope you were able to snag some tasties that fell to the floor on Thanksgiving!

Visiting from the Blog Hop, nice to meet you!

    Drools and licks,
